What a Camp

What an absolute pleasure the last 48 hrs has been. To be surrounded by so many dedicated, enthusiastic gymnasts showcasing their obvious talent and coached skills was inspiring to say the least.

Furthermore nothing fires up Nicky more than the effervescence of youth and the chance for her to try and make a difference in their lives.

Nicky’s warm up Scottish Summer Camp 2019

The coaches and hospitality were as always first class and a special thank you must go out to Donna Kilbane who’s event organisational skills are phenomenal.

When you’re walking through arrivals and you see your name on a board being held high by John our personal driver…

Class was the first thought that entered my mind.

The logistical transitions from Edinburgh to Dundee were seamless like a formula 1 pit stop. Mercedes should hire you as they would recognise the tremendous amount of hard work, planning and preparation which goes into making things look that easy! From hospitality to nutrition every need and more was catered in a way that only someone extremely good at their role could provide. A credit to your country. #scottishgymnastics

Muchas gracias Donna for making our experience so special

Donna Kilbane, Nicky, Me, Chris Short & Dan Summer Camp 2019

As a fantastic bonus Dan and I had the chance to meet one of TeamGym’s great coaches who was tutoring alongside camp. A man who Nicky has always wanted me to meet as her words…

‘He is 1 of the Original legends in TeamGym’

In addition Chris Short alongside Candy Lakin another Fantastic TeamGym coach of many years, are responsible for my first ever ‘Gasp’ at the British Championships with their gymnast Shingi Mhembere. Who performed a Double Straight Somersault transition on Tumble before his final move!!!

This is way back in 2011. To put that in perspective, that’s an elite move that only some members of the top 3 European teams can perform now and I know of only 3 British Teamgym Squad members capable of performing that move in 2019

Nicky filming him in warm up British Championships 2015

To have the opportunity to learn from someone who coached the above was an unexpected opportunity that superseded our expectations. Thank you Chris for sharing your extensive Biomechanical knowledge and the secret ‘Golden Nugget’ preps that blew our minds which will definitely improve every future Warrior session we coach.

Got to say, seeing black and white grainy footage from the 60’s only enhances the nostalgia and has exposed your obvious vintage which your looks defy.

Finally a special thank you to all the Scottish coaches and gymnasts. You all made the 7 hour sessions seem like 5 mins. Evidence of the old saying

‘Time flies when you’re having fun’

Summer Camp in 60 secs

When one of Scottish Gymnastics top coaches Amanda Boucher presented us with these T shirts, I was humbled beyond belief. #scottishgymnastics

Nuff respect Amanda as your warmth and kindness is always on display through your gymnasts and as a recipient myself, fully understand why you have such a great gymnastic club! #irvinebaygymnasticsclub

Our lovely gift from the Scottish Summer Camp

In conclusion if we are lucky enough to be invited back for 3rd year, and the weather prevented any travel, the desire to attend would motivate me to walk.

How to get rid of Debut Competition Nerves…

In 1989 I was fortunate to get selected to fight for the British Kyokushinkai Karate Team. Jubilation upon my selection quickly turned to panic when the task in hand dawned on me.

Questions of ‘What if I loose in front of everyone including my parents’. Or worse, get knocked out! ‘What if I let my team mates down’, were constant negative thoughts going around my head.

I felt sick to my stomach. I Could not sleep, eat, felt drained and so unfit.

However my Shihan at that time the great Steve Arneil said ‘Carlton nerves are natural everyone feel nervous. However fear comes from lack of preparation’.

Osu Shihan but can you elaborate?

‘Have you trained hard enough?’

Osu!

‘Do you feel fit enough’

Osu!

‘To have been selected to compete shows you must be technically good enough’

Osu!

‘So relax and enjoy the day because remember your the man in the arena, and very few get to do what your about to do’

Osu Shihan.

One of those wax on wax off moments if your old enough to understand. If not read the following…

So to all Warriors. Enjoy the day and remember each and everyone of have worked your socks off and you deserve to be there. Furthermore each and everyone of you are definitely a better gymnast than I will ever be.

Good luck Warriors and looking forward to seeing you all making memories for life.

I have never forgotten my first comp, my team mates on that day and hopefully never will.

Sensei Block Teachings continue…

Remember this?

A strange thing happened today… If not – look back to the post featuring Thea on April 7th 2019

In summary in 3 hrs with the aid of blocks and preps from the 80’s Nicky managed to teach Thea (and all of us watching) how with the correct technique anything is achievable.

I’m sure 30 years of knowledge helps too but I digress…

From that date till now, Thea has worked tirelessly, session after session, on shortening her side to increase her angular momentum or twisting speed. The faster you can twist, the more rotations you can perform. Which is simple to say, however takes complete understanding before any gymnast can execute the move whilst in the air

However after weeks of preparations, wholehearted commitment on Thursday 11th of July we are proud to announce that

Thea can now do this…

Then to prove it was no fluke she landed three in a row

Stunning development Warrior in just 13 weeks we salute you.

In addition a massive thank you to Nicky who teaches us mere mortals something new every session that blows our minds.

Dream Believe Achieve

The Government is coming…Who?

Now we know we are officially old.

Have you ever given a gift to someone that you were so excited about, that you could not wait to give it to them. Only to be met by a perplexed face completely the opposite to the reaction you had anticipated.

Last night session was indicative of the above

With our in house tournament soon approaching as a reward for all their hard work we wanted to give the gymnasts something special.

With pride in our hearts we announced to the gymnasts that Henry Smith MP is going to attend our in house tournament on Sunday 21st July

Their bemused look and silence was making me extremely conscious of the grey hairs visible on my scalp. However when the questions starting firing ‘Is he going to judge us? What gymnastic position does he hold? Is he the head of British Gymnastics? What…..

At that moment we realised our youngest members have no knowledge of Parliament.

So we set about educating them in current affairs and explained that your local MP is responsible for all of us living in this town and has a say in the laws that govern our town and the country.

Wow, so he’s really important then!

Yes!

Well what if I fall in front of him? Now I’m nervous? Can we get a picture with him?

It was at that moment we knew it was going to be a long night.

In conclusion we are so proud that Henry Smith MP is coming to NW and after an eventful political evening….. the gymnasts are too!

Whoop Whoop!
